A Small Goal

Last year I noticed I only finished reading two books, which for me was odd. I use to always read but since I got a smart phone I’ve stopped reading at night. Instead I play games or check Facebook.
So I’ve set myself a goal to read 20 books this year. I brushed off my library card and went and borrowed The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

I’m really enjoying. I’m doing the reading challenge through Good Reads and I’m encouraging a few friends to join me.
I’ve almost finished reading The Help and I’d love some suggestions on what to read next.
What’s your favorite book? Have you been reading lately?

Happy 4th Birthday to CrochetPaws on Etsy.

Four years ago I took the plunge and opened my own Etsy shop. In all truthfulness it sucked. I didn’t have a clear idea on what I was going to sell and it looked down right tacky. Fast forward to today, after tweaking here and there I found my style and something I love doing. Designing patterns.

I never went to art school, heck I didn’t even finish yearfox cup cosy 10. But that didn’t stop me. After years of building up the nerve to write a pattern then test it, I felt ready to sell it. The first pattern was the owl cup cosy. Owl cup cosy

I haven’t sold much but I am so happy and proud that I have started. So I am going to share that happiness with a 20% off sale. All you have to do is enter the code: happy4thbday at the checkout of my shop and Etsy will automatically take the 20% off.  The sale finishes March 24, 2015.

My favorite baby jacket pattern

image

I love this ripple jacket pattern. I’ve made so many that I know most of it without reading it while crocheting. I’ve made one in 8ply with a larger hook for a 1 year old seeing the current pattern I’m using only makes a 3 month old size.
Its a great pattern to show off a vergated yarn with a long repeat and I find its fairly quick to make so a great idea for baby showers. Only takes me a day or two.

Reaffirming doodle

http://positivedoodles.tumblr.com/post/111302277350

I love reading postivedoodles on tumblr and this one I felt I had to share. So many times I’ve seen others people’s work and just thought so lowly of mine.
I think its something we’ve all had to deal with whether it’s art or other things we do in our life. We can constantly feel pressured to do the best of everything and even if we are told that what we have done is the best sometimes we don’t believe it and compare our work to others.
So please remember that everything you create is great!

The best laid plans…..

Of mice and men often go awry.

This saying is adapted from Robert Burn’s “To a Mouse”. It seems to fit in well with this week. I’ve had plans to do all manner of things but alas not much of it has come to pass.
Sewing projects to start and baking to do. But what has taken most of my time has been my current cup cosy pattern.

To start with I couldn’t decide on a base. So I dragged out a pattern book that has several swatch patterns and test a few. Then I headed to Pinterest  and sifted through. Nup, nothing looked right. It just seemed too much for such a small item. So went with a flat back ground and it work!

It has a little more sewing but to me it just seems right! I’m hoping the pattern to be polished and ready for sale by the end of next week.

Winter is coming (hopefully)

Its summer in Australia and for some the thought of icy mornings is far away, but for me I’m planning my winter knits and crochet blankets now.

image

I’ve ordered squishy thick yarn and selected patterns on Raverly. Bought new needles as I’ve been replacing my current needles with the interchangeable Knitpro set and I’m  trying to finish most other projects that I have lying around the house (probably shouldn’t have projects unfinished so often).

One pattern I’ve picked for my self if Kate Davies “Owls“. I’m making it in pink as love wearing colour in winter. It’s dull enough without me adding to it.
I also have some big balls of jet so I’m thinking a sweater dress for each of my younger daughters.
Have you started thinking about the cooler months?

The Great British Sewing Bee

On Saturday I went to my local cafe to join in the first Creative Cartle and we made a bunting. But during the great time there a few of the girls were talking about the Great British Sewing Bee. So today I decide to check it out on YouTube.
I was so surprised to see one of my favorite blogger Tilly! I was stoked to see how she works. I’ve been reading her blog since I saw her in Mollie Makes.

Still learning to sew

I love creating my own clothes for many reasons. I’m short and pair shaped so a lot of things don’t fit quiet right plus I love to stand out. Which is why I made Gertie’s sultury sheath dress (you can check it out here.)

image

I used a light weight drape fabric with a full lining. I’m still learning to sew which means I made heaps of mistakes. Like sewing pieces upside down. But after a whole day working on the dress and only stopping briefly for lunch I finished it in one day!

Its lovely and I am so proud of myself, another reason why I love making my own clothes. The sense of achievement I get when I have a beautiful unique item to wear.
Are you working on a new item?

Crafting this week.

This week I’ve been a buzz with creative energy. Enjoying the cooler few days in Victoria with the kids going back to school. I’ve been using the quieter days to knit a short sleeve sweater (still knitting it), working on the new pattern for my etsy store and making another baby jacket.

image

Its not unusual for me to have a few projects on the go. I’ll make one while I’m watching TV in the evenings. I always have one in my bag to work on during waiting times at school or when I’m a trivia. Yes, I knit and crochet in the pubs.

The pattern I’ve been working on for my shop is another cosplay pattern. The last one which was a simple fox ear pattern was downloaded over 150 times! This one is cat ears. They require a little more patience than the fox ears but my daughters think they are amazing. Both younger girls have pinched a pair and wore them to school.

image

My biggest critics on what I make are my four children. If they aren’t to into what I’ve made I know that it needs another shot. I’m very lucky to have creative children. These guys are major inspirations to me. With quirky ideas and encouragement when I’m down, I’m one blessed mum.

Hope you’re all having a fabulous crafting week
